Then, going to http://ftp.logilab.org/dists/karmic/ and looking into
the .deb or .orig.tag.gz I can see the function ...

Now ... the suspect is this:

we ship : /usr/share/pyshared/logilab/common/

but your exception creeps from

/usr/lib/pymodules/yams 

could it be related ?
can you check the originating module of logilab.common ?

e.g: 

>>> import logilab.common.date as d
>>> d    
<module 'logilab.common.date' from
'/home/auc/src/fcw/logilab/common/date.pyc'>

That might be a packaging error that creates but does not maintain
properly pymodules and pyshared ...

You could try to reinstall the offending package(s).
